i think part of it is moffat’s inability to write women.

omg yes. seriously. i think that’s part of why sherlock is written so much better than doctor who, because there are no girls (other than irene, *cough* aka river song *cough*). moffat writes “strong” women, in that they are ass-kicking and independent, but they’re not actually real, fleshed out characters with consistent motives and desires, y’know, LIKE REAL PEOPLE
